“It’s especially rewarding,” he says, “because doctors didn’t think I’d live 18 months. The first sound I remember was the metronome of the heart monitor when I came out from the anesthetic of my eleven-hour operation. The first sight I saw was my wife, Wendy. She was standing beside me, holding my hand.
